Position Title: Unarmed Security Officer
Job Type: Full-Time / Part-Time
Location: Varies (Commercial, Residential, Retail, etc.)
Reports To: Security Supervisor / Operations Manager

 

 

Job Summary:

An Unarmed Security Officer in California is responsible for maintaining a visible presence at various premises (commercial, residential, or industrial sites) to deter criminal activity, enforce facility rules and regulations, and ensure the safety and security of the property, employees, and visitors. The role does not require the use of firearms or weapons.

 

 

Key Responsibilities:

Patrolling Premises:
Regular patrols should be conducted on foot or by vehicle to monitor the property, identify security risks, and report hazards or incidents. Patrols may include building interiors, parking lots, and surrounding areas.

Access Control:
Monitor entrances and exits to ensure unauthorized individuals cannot access restricted areas. This may include checking IDs, visitor logs, and maintaining control of security gates or doors.

Monitoring Security Systems:
Operate and monitor security surveillance systems, alarms, and other security technology (CCTV, access control systems) to detect suspicious activities.

Incident Reporting:
Document and report any incidents, disturbances, accidents, or suspicious activities clearly and accurately. These reports may be written or entered into digital systems.

Customer Service:
Interact courteously and professionally with employees, visitors, and the public. Provide directions, assistance, and information as needed. Respond to inquiries and offer a reassuring security presence.

Enforce Policies and Regulations:
Enforce company policies, rules, and regulations on site and ensure compliance with safety, health, and security protocols.

Emergency Response:
Follow established procedures to respond to emergencies, such as fire alarms, medical incidents, or disturbances. This may involve coordinating with law enforcement, fire departments, or emergency medical teams when needed.

Deterrence of Criminal Activity:
Deter criminal activities (e.g., theft, vandalism, trespassing) through a visible security presence and proactive monitoring.

Event Security (if applicable):
For certain positions, you may provide security at special events, ensuring crowd control and a safe environment for attendees.

 

Qualifications & Requirements:

Education:
High school diploma or equivalent is typically required.

Licensing/Certifications:

Must be licensed by the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS) as a security guard.

Completion of the required Guard Card training (including 8-hour pre-assignment, 8-hour annual refresher course, and 16-hour continuing education) is mandatory.

CPR and First Aid certification may be required or preferred.

Experience:
Previous experience in security, law enforcement, or customer service may be preferred but not always necessary.

Skills:

Strong observational skills and attention to detail.

Good communication skills, both written and verbal.

Ability to handle stressful situations calmly and professionally.

Ability to use security equipment and technology (e.g., security cameras, alarm systems, radios).

Customer service-oriented attitude.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to stand or walk for extended periods of time.

Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.

Ability to respond quickly to emergencies and physically manage difficult situations when necessary.

Other:

Must be able to pass a background check and drug screening.

Must be able to work various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Work Environment:
Security officers may work in a variety of environments, including office buildings, retail centers, industrial locations, or residential properties. Some locations may be more hazardous than others, requiring heightened vigilance.

Shifts:
Officers may work in rotating shifts, including day, evening, and overnight shifts. Some positions may involve weekend and holiday work.

Uniform:
Security officers are typically required to wear a uniform while on duty, including a company-issued badge and any other necessary identification.
